The honored children on this page exemplify the very definition of what a survivor is.  These warriors have conquered their beasts and we hope that their stories will serve as inspiration and hope to future cancer kids and their families as they begin their own battles against this horrible disease.

In spite of their victories, many of these children are still at risk for relapses further providing the urgent need for additional research, support and A CURE!
Christian L. - Our Wilms Warrior Christian’s mother went into labor and delivered his newest brother, via emergency c-section on December 18, 2005.  He was visiting his new brother and mother in the hospital when his father felt a lump on his tummy.   He had no other symptoms and had just been to the doctor for a physical in October.   He was sent for tests the very next day. On December 21st, Christian was diagnosed with a Wilms' Tumor.  (Cancerous tumor of the kidney.)   He went to Children's Memorial Hospital only two days later for a radical nephrectomy of his left kidney as well as removal of a football sized tumor and some inflamed lymph nodes. (Merry Christmas, right?!) Pathology confirmed he had a Wilms' Tumor Stage 3 (since there was one positive lymph node) with a favorable histology.  Christian received his first chemotherapy treatment on Dec.29th and continued receiving treatments every week for 9 weeks and then every third week after that for another 4 months. He also received 6 rounds of radiation treatments.  There were many bumps in the road resulting in numerous trips to the emergency room. The most severe was when he became neutropenic and needed a blood transfusion. Late in his treatment, Christian’s port pushed right through his chest and had to be removed.  He had to receive his last two chemo treatments via an I.V. as a result. In spite of it all,  Christian has remained a normal, happy little boy.   Currently, Christian is N.E.D. (No Evidence of Disease), and continues receiving scans every 3 months to be sure.
Christian has always been a very compassionate and caring child, (always worried about others) and his cancer has brought that out even more.  Every night he prays for other kids with cancer and his wish is that there is a cure some day!

Mikayla's Journey
On Sunday, September 16th (Mikayla's 5th birthday) Megan noticed that Mikayla had blood in her urine. It was the middle of Mikayla's birthday party at Pump It Up, so Megan tried to stay calm and told Bill what had happened when they got home that evening. Mikayla did not complain of burning or pain and didn't seem to think anything was out of the ordinary. Megan took her to the pediatrician on Monday where they found an extremely high level of blood and protein in her urine. The pediatrician sent Mikayla over to the local hospital to have a full blood work up, another urine sample, strep test and abdominal ultrasound. She wanted the tests done STAT...a scary sound to any parent. Mikayla was unable to get the ultrasound that evening because she needed to fast prior to the test so it was scheduled for the following morning. The blood, strep and even the urine test came back normal. By the time she had urinated at the hospital her urine had cleared with only a trace amount of blood present. On Tuesday, September 18th Megan took Mikayla back to the hospital for an ultrasound, and that is when they found a tumor on Mikayla's left kidney. Mikayla's pediatrician called Megan at the hospital and told her to get Mikayla in the car and drive directly to Children's Memorial Hospital. Bill met Mikayla and Megan at the hospital and were told in the ER that it looked like Mikayla had a Wilms tumor, a rare & malignant kidney tumor. They ran a CT scan to confirm what they thought they saw on the ultrasound and to check for possible spread. Dr. Kathy Barsness explained that they would not know for sure if it had spread until they opended Mikayla up but from the scans it did not appear to have affected any other organs. On Thursday, September 20th Mikayla went into surgery and Dr. Barsness removed her left kidney.
The pathologist's report concluded that the tumor was consistent with that of a Wilm's tumor, and that the histology of the tumor is favorable. The lymph nodes they tested came out negative but they did say there were cancer cells at the margin of the tumor which means the tissue surrounding the tumor that is still inside her has cancer cells in it. The tumor also ruptured during surgery. The rupture along with the invasion of the surrounding tissue places the cancer at a Stage 3. Even at this advanced stage she is said to have a very good prognosis of 85-90% survival.
Mikayla began radiation on Tuesday,October 2nd and will be given chemo at the same time beginning on Wednesday, October 3rd. The chemo will be given once a week for the first few months and then once every three weeks after that for a total of 28 weeks. Radiation will be every day for one week. This treatment schedule, if all goes well, should last about seven months. She will be given three dif ferent chemos (Vincristine, Dactinomyacin, and Doxorubicin) and they all have different side effects.
As we all know, Mikayla is a beautiful princess and there is no doubt in our minds that she will be very strong and brave throughout her illness. We thank you all for your continued support and prayers and hope that you check back often to join us through her treatment.
4.21.08 - 3 weeks after final chemo. Mikayla has an echocardiogram, CT scan, and physical with oncology. All tests come back normal. First results are NED (No Evidence of Disease)!!!!!
5.5.08 - Port removed
7.21.08 - First 3 month scans (chest XRay & ultrasound)
My name is Donald Alfredo M. my friends call me Donnie and my family call me "Nano".  I am now 2 years old I am the youngest of 3 boys I have a brother Joey who is 9 and another brother Felipe who is 4!  I love my family.
One day my mama took me to the doctor for my 16 month check up and the doctor checked my tummy and sent me to have an ultrasound its a machine that looked at my insides.  Later on that day the doctor called my mama and my daddy to tell them they had found a mass on my right kidney...and it was cancer!  The type of cancer was called Wilm's Tumor.  Right after that I had to go to Children's Memorial Hospital and have some test, they came to the conclusion that I needed to have surgery to remove my right kidney along with the tumor and some lymphnodes and also place a port connected to my vien to be able to recieve my chemo.
I have now completed 7 radiation treatments and 25 weeks of chemotherapy.  My hair has begun growing back and I'm lookin handsome being a blonde. All my follow up test have come back NED!  My mom was insisted on having my venus port removed before the end of the year, so on December 26th, 2007 I had it removed.  I have beat this battle and only ask that you keep me in your prayers that I don't ever have to fight this battle again.
